Motion before emotion sounds like a great mantra! I've incorporated motion in the form of morning yoga into my daily routine and it has been a game changer. I have experience of staying in bed too long, overthinking the days events to try to "prepare," but honestly the overthinking just made me more frustrated and started my day with an elevated fight/flight/ freeze state. A few years ago I got into yoga, and I began doing yoga first thing in the morning, just after drinking water. For real, the breathing focused my thoughts on what's in my control, and the movement loosened up my muscles and made me strong and centered... And ironically yoga makes me prepared for the day in ways overthinking never did.
I LOVE THIS - it’s WILD right how much just moving your body helps you think, right? Like we THINK thinking will help us reason but often - movement is the thing to get us going!
Love this! It reminds me of Gretchen Rubin’s Third Commandment from The Happiness Project: Act the way I want to feel.
And I’m really looking forward to re-watching your first Substack Live video, because I received some awesome advice from another Glow Getter and I want to thank her again, but I can’t remember her name! Just in case anyone knows— I asked if doing a voice recording was an effective way to journal, and she said she liked to do a voice memo and then write a response in her journal when she listened to it later. WOW! This method has been a major game changer for me and has strengthened my daily journaling ritual by leaps and bounds! 🩷
OMG- YAY! I hope we can find out that Glow Getter too and let her know! The science also backs up that talking into a voice recorder can be just as effective :) LMK what you think of the live!
I really enjoyed it! And yes, I remember you saying that voice recording is just as effective— but after I did it, I rarely listened to it again. And something about listening to it and that added step of writing a response in my journal just really clicked for me— but I never would’ve thought to do that on my own! ☺️
