As a perk for being a Glow Getter, I’m giving you my NEW, super-improved emotion wheel. Huzzah! This will not be released until the paperback of Glow in the F*cking Dark comes out in January. I am thrilled to give you this 3ish months early and for free :) Why?
Because if there EVER was a time for an emotion wheel - it is NOW.
With many of us feeling super negative emotions, overwhelmed, and even a little burnt-out with the news, NOW is the time to figure out how we actually feel and what we will do about it.
Don’t believe me and my endless tirades about the power of emotion wheels? A 2007 study coming out of UCLA’s Social Cognitive Neuroscience Lab found that the simple act of labeling our emotions, “diminished the response of the amygdala and other limbic regions to negative emotional images.” Which is fancy speak for: labeling our emotions, scientifically, lessens the reactions of the part of our brain that processes fear.
This is why it’s SO IMPORTANT that we never dismiss our feelings, push them down, or ignore them. If we do that, our distress grows. So instead of thinking, “I feel scared, but that’s stupid,” HONOR and investigate that emotion so you can calm it down. If we pay attention to ourselves, if we take a moment to acknowledge how we really feel, we can almost immediately relieve some of our nastier emotions and savor the delightful ones!
So, this week, I’d really love us all to PAY CLOSE ATTENTION to our feelings, label them, and get curious about them using my new and improved emotion wheel…
